Exporting homegrown pop culture has become something of an art in South Korea, as K-pop and K-dramas seduce foreign markets from Southeast Asia to Latin America. The phenomenon has its own name: “Hallyu”, which loosely translates as “The Korean Wave”. FRANCE 24’s Olivia Salazar-Winspear heads to Seoul, going behind the scenes of the music industry at one of the city’s many K-pop academies, where students train in dance, singing and production.
Post-rock trio Jambinai provide a counterpoint to the sugary offerings of the boy bands and girl bands of mainstream pop. The band shows us how they use traditional instruments to create modern sounds.
